Ghana is a country with a reputation of resistance against foreign domination. This is amply documented by the several wars colonialists had to fight to bring the native populations under their influence.
Ghana was the first in sub-Saharan Africa to become independent after World War II. Not through protracted warfare as was the case in several colonies, but through clever use of the democratic weapons colonialists had always talked about but seldom allowed outside their own countries.
It is a country of freedom-loving people. Ghanaian love of freedom is legendary and can be felt in the self-assured way people go about their business. The slave dealers of old had more than enough of this during their activities on the Guinea coast. The proud captives from the Gold Coast were notorious as organizers of rebellions on ships and would often fight to death than lose their freedom.
Ghana is therefore a country which was in the forefront for total liberation in Africa and of all suppressed peoples long before the idea became popular in the rest of the continent.
“The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked with the total liberation of Africa.” These unmistakable words were spoken by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, on the eve of the country’s independence.
